    «ALTARSTEIN - for silent voices»

is a new musical work by Sinikka Langeland, which is a continuation of her musical settings to poems by  Jon Fosse. Langeland has composed music for Fosse's poetry, and the work is a follow-up to the release «Wind And Sun» from 2023.

The work is performed by a new ensemble consisting of renowned musicians such as Tone Åse (vocals), Kristina Fransson (trumpet), Svante Henryson (cello), Ståle Storløkken (keyboard) and Sinikka Langeland  on vocals and kantele.

The title has a deep historical foundation: it refers to a medieval stone altar plate from Guddal Church in Vestland, and an associated, mysterious moor burial ground from the 12th century. Langeland sees the work as a musical tribute to the "silent voices" of the ancestors who lie buried there, while the music also reflects a love of life.

Can something magical be more than magical - undoubtedly, yesterday Sinikka Langeland and her exceptional guild of fellow musicians broke the limit of magical

…. There is always an x-factor when musicians in the "ECM family" enter our stages

  • Wolf Rune

    Solokonserter Wolf Rune

Wolf Rune, a solo album, casts a new light on the highly personal idiom of Sinikka Langeland, kantele player and folk singer from Finnskogen. She integrates her own songs among folk hymns, shamanistic rune songs and traditional dance pieces, and expands the expressive range of her instruments.

It's a very beautiful, original, thought-provoking album, played and sung by a highly accomplished musician who's absolutely herself. — London Jazz News

Recorded in 2019 at Rainbow Studio in Oslo, Wolf Rune is an addition to Sinikka’s ECM discography. The music incorporates rune songs, spells and incantations, religious tunes and folk dances, and verses that testify to the interlinked nature of all things — from Meister Eckhart to Jon Fosse.

  • Wind And Sun

    Wind And Sun

Up to now, music to poems by Børli, Södergran, Olav H. Hauge and forest-Finnish rune songs has formed Sinikka’s core repertoire. In Jon Fosse’s poems she finds an underlying sound that resonates with her. The music is folk-based, but she also wants to bring the timeless aspect of Fosse’s poetry into our own time with musicians who use a modern form of expression. The kantele sounds almost like an orchestra in its own right.

This ensemble was put together for the concerts celebrating Sinikka’s 60th birthday. The musicians raise the compositions with their improvisations, in concerts inspired by Fosse’s western Norwegian landscape of wind, sun, sea and sky..
